Yes. Almost all waterfront construction in our area is regulated by the NC Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA) and potentially the Army Corps of Engineers.

The good news? You don’t have to figure it out alone. We are experienced in navigating the permitting process for Onslow, Pender, Carteret, and New Hanover counties. If your property crosses wetlands or marsh grass, regulations often require “flow-through” decking (grated decking) to allow sunlight to reach the vegetation below. We offer premium flow-through options that meet these environmental standards while protecting your dock from storm surge uplift.

It comes down to the piles. We use heavy marine excavators and vibratory hammers to drive piles to “refusal” or sufficient depth. We don’t just set them in the mud; we drive them deep enough to achieve the necessary load-bearing capacity for your specific soil conditions.

Flow-through decking (open-grate style) allows water to pass through the dock rather than pushing against it during high tides or hurricanes. This significantly reduces the pressure on the structure, keeping your dock intact when the water rises. It is also cooler on bare feet than traditional pressure-treated lumber!

While we install both, vinyl sheet piling is the modern standard for longevity. Unlike wood, vinyl is impervious to marine borers (shipworms) which are common in our waters. It provides a clean, polished look (often gray or tan) that doesn’t fade or warp. And because most vinyl materials come with manufacturer warranties spanning 50 years or more, you can expect it last a good, long while.
